Abilene Christian rugby gain sponsor

With the Texas rugby season now in full swing, Ruck Science is pleased to announce that next month we will begin sending monthly donations to one of the state’s newest rugby organizations. Abilene Rugby Club, established in 2016 is actually a combination of three different rugby clubs all rolled into one. In just their first season, the club supports a men’s, women’s and the Abilene Christian University (ACU) rugby teams. We’ll be assisting the club by providing the best possible nutrition products for the program as well as training information and promo materials for fundraisers. Read on to learn more about the partnership and Abilene Rugby club.

Abilene Rugby Club

The Abilene rugby club is comprised of a group of rugby players of a range of different experience levels and talents. They regularly host out-of-town teams including players from Dyess AFB and local university team including Hardin Simmons, ACU, Cisco, and McMurry). The club’s dedicated coaching staff is made up primarily of volunteers who have given up their time to coach and develop the talents of young players in the Abilene area. The men’s club is broken into two different teams, Abilene and ACU. While the club is actively recruiting female players to join the women’s program.

To play for Abilene, you must be registered through USA Rugby, which means going through their CIPP process. This is essential as it provides insurance which covers injuries at training and during rugby games as well as travel to and from venues. Abilene welcomes all newcomers to the club as long as you have CIPPed with USA Rugby and the Texas Rugby Union.

The club plans to develop youth and high-school programs in the near future. Management is currently seeking application for coach, training and administrative roles at future youth programs. Please contact the club here for more information about youth rugby, or if you have a child who is interested in the sport. If there is enough interest in these programs from the local area, the club may apply for grant funding from USA Rugby’s Rookie Rugby Program, so let them know even if you’re not 100% sure about playing.

Watch them in action

Here’s some film from earlier this month showing the two men’s teams at the Abilene rugby club going at it. ACU are playing Abilene Rugby. A great showcase of skill by both teams and lots of areas to work on at future training sessions.

Local press coverage

The Abilene rugby club is a bit of a novelty in the Abilene area this year. Local media outlets have been quick to note the benefits to the community of having a rugby club in town. ktsx.com and dyess.af.mil have both written extensively about rugby in the Abilene area with Col. David Benson, 7th Bomb Wing commander commenting that “…we are always striving to find new ways to get involved with our local community that so graciously supports us and this served as an ideal opportunity. It was such a pleasure learning about the sport these students are so passionate about, and how eager they were to share their expertise with us.”
