The Cruise-a-Matics were originally a rugby 7s club. How many clubs can say that? They were first formed as a touring 7s side on Independence Day, July 4, 1983. While they didn’t immediately see a huge swell in numbers, their founding members Jim Cross and Claude Betbeze toiled hard to grow the club through the 1980s to the point now where they’re well known right across the country.
Much of the club’s notoriety comes from what’s become the unofficial 7s tournament of the deep south, the Hotter Than Hell 7s. Past entrants include our partners at Old Maroon who have competed several times and were qualifying runners-up in 2004. For a full list of winners, checkout this timeline which goes back an incredible 33 years. The tournament is well known for its blazing temperatures which take a huge toll on the players who participate. We’re hoping that at this year’s tournament, Ruck Science will be there with sample products for anyone attending to try. Want to enter your team in this year’s tournament? Want to learn more about the emblem that adorns the Cruisers’ jerseys? The description reads…
Starting from the top is the Lion, a symbol of bravery, courage and leadership prancing on an early ancestral battle helmet. The casque is resting on a shield; our emblem of a staunch defense with the stars as the paths of our travels, and the crossed bars, our colors, blacks as our unknown spirits.
There are two super-simple ways to do this. First, donate directly to the club via PayPal.
